The answer: 2021 has been an unprecedented time for the Cabinet Making Industry. Although we have been repetitively in and out of lockdowns we have carried on working through being that we have been classified as an essential service. Great for us, however being that so many individuals have now been given the flexibility within their workplaces to work from home, less interstate and international travel and restrictions on movement in general – this has given many the opportunity to reflect on their own homes and seek for improvements to make their personal spaces an inviting retreat. That being said along with our repeat customers and builders this adds additional wait times to our busy schedule. We are booking into March 2022 for installations. Our quote times are up to 4 weeks from date of contact.

The thing with small business and maintaining a five star reputation is that if you expand to far you easily lose that reputation. You can no longer over see all facets of the cabinet making process, you can't ensure 110% quality control and we strive hard to be able to deliver that to each and every one of our customers.

We are making small changes, Alyce is now in the office 1 – 2 days a week, we have just commenced an Australian Apprenticeship with Ben our Mature Age Apprentice who comes to us straight from the Royal Australian Navy after serving 6 years with a refrigeration engineering background and is eager to learn our trade with a high attention to detail and we have Mick our Qualified Cabinet Maker and Carpenter who has many years experience in our trade that will oversee our factory from the assembly of custom cabinetry through to installation than we have Barry our Qualified Builder with over 40 years Building expertise. Brad as always will continue to be our point of contact and be with our customers every step of the way to ensure a pleasant custom cabinet making experience for all.

2021 AND COVID-19 RECOVERY IMPACTS ON THE JOINERY INDUSTRY

Lets face it, 2020 was a complete ride off for most of us.

Whilst during the severity of COVID and restrictions although it didn’t impact our industry as much as other industries we are certainly in 2021 feeling the pinch of it.

In terms of where we are at as a business – we are flat out!

Currently we are booking installations into May onwards, requests for quotations and measure ups are at an all time high and we are booking into late March for these – where as this time last year we could have seen you within two weeks.

Great for industry and business alike, not so good for those that are wanting things done tomorrow, unfortunately it just can't happen and this is across the board in our industry.

We received a report from one of our suppliers just last week saying the Joinery Industry is up 50% on demand than this time last year and in years prior.

With the government stimulus’s in place and more of us spending time at home - home renovations have significantly increased.

As a business we are working as hard as possible to cater to all during this extremely busy time.

Nation and worldwide our leading supplier in hardware Blum (which supplies the highest quality hinges e.t.c) has had difficulties in processing and distributing orders, due to lockdowns in Austria and Germany where their production occurs. They have been in overdrive working 24 hours a day 7 days a week to catch back up. Due to this we have been delayed in final fitoffs until stock arrives, however pleasingly as of today we are starting to receive our hardware again which is fantastic.

My biggest piece of advice for anyone contemplating joinery of any type is to start the process now, as delays are much longer than usual and by starting early it eases a lot of pressure on all parties.

Transparency is key with any business and we enjoy being able to give you these updates so you know where we are at prior to the initial call you make.

DMB KITCHENS COVID 19 POSITION STATEMENT – 5 PROCEDURES TO PREVENT THE SPREAD

DMB Kitchens takes the COVID 19 Pandemic extremely seriously.

It is our position as a contributing community member that we must do all within our power to ensure that we abide by both State and Federal Government requests in keeping safe distances, limiting contact and avoiding gatherings of any sort. Therefore the following 5 procedures are put into place above our current advice from government.

1. DMB Kitchens Showroom is closed to all until further notice. In the event a customer requires to come into the showroom for colour selection this will be an advanced appointment booked and a maximum of 2 people to be in our showroom at any one time. As we can all appreciate having our normal walk ins is not appropriate at this point in time and won't be for some time to come.

2. Where possible those requiring our “measure and quote” service will be asked a series of general health questions if it is an onsite measure, we will ensure all our PPE gear is worn and discarded with any visit to site – anyone who is feeling slightly unwell will be asked to postpone to a later time.

3. An alternative to an onsite quotation is the customer can send the house/kitchen plan to us via email brad@dmbkitchens.com.au in conjunction with a Facetime or Zoom call to alleviate any contact at all (this method is preferred)

4. Our suppliers that deliver our freight to us have also put into play their specific procedures for limiting contact also. They deliver, unload and sign the paperwork required themselves using correct PPE equipment and discarding upon disembarking from our Warehouse.

5. With our DMB Kitchens Team physically within the Warehouse and Showroom combined there is only two members of staff at anyone time we well and truly exceed the appropriate sqm per person.

NOW is the ideal time for those self isolating to get started on a home project! Our FLAT PACK CABINETRY is a fantastic way to keep yourself motivated and busy during this period of time. For anyone wishing to start a Home reno we are offering a FREE 1 hour ZOOM consult and trade advice for you may it be you have purchased a flat pack from us and need instructions on how to assemble it we will be with you every step of the way (just not our physical presence of course!)

Over the Christmas holidays we purchased a new machine that will enable us to now create “Flat Pack” kitchens. We have received extensive training on this and are so pleased to be able to offer those that are budget conscious the ability to buy quality custom flat packs.

A flat pack kitchen for those that do not know is literally all the
cabinetry cut to size and the customer either installs it themselves
or seeks a qualified cabinet maker to do so. I would strongly
recommend those that are looking into “Flat Pack” kitchens to use
a qualified and licensed Joiner to install as it requires a thorough
skill set to be able to install successfully.

So to sum up a “Flat Pack” kitchen they come made to order - with
your measurements, pre drilled for ease of assembly, can be assembled by us (optional) and delivered (optional). If you are on a tight budget this is your best avenue to go down. Always keep in mind though cost factors as sometimes it works out the same cost once you add all your trades together for a flat back kitchen vs custom made kitchen.

1. Shaker style doors/drawers are a massive hit at the moment. The standard “Shaker” style is traditionally known to have recessed

drawers/doors – a “5 piece” drawer front so to speak. Majority

of joiners will purchase them directly off a supplier already made in

a standard form, however here at DMB Kitchens Port Macquarie we make to order so our scope of “Shaker” style is limitless as to the overall finish you want to achieve. There are so many “Shaker”

profiles on offer to you that we are happy to customise a finish that

you want not a generic one.

I personally feel that a “shaker” door or drawer front is visually more appealing to the eye. The shaker style originated in the

early 1700’s and over two centuries on appears to be making a big

comeback this year! The best part about a “shaker” style is it is

timeless & versatility with this style is second to none. You can

literally go from a theme of provincial, traditional, Hamptons and

even as far as Scandi using a “shaker” styler drawer/door front.

2. Integrated appliances is also on the rise this year, with life being so busy this is a fantastic “instant clean” option where the

appliances are integrated into the cabinetry so for instance the bin

you used to leave to the side of the kitchen so your visitors could

see, is now put into the cabinetry to give the vision it’s a

standard draw but in fact, a bin is hiding behind there! The same

applies to your fridge, dishwasher, microwave e.t.c it’s a fabulous

option for those that find having the appliances visually on display

uncanny – this is the option for you.

3. Butlers Pantry is a superb option if you are a minimalistic person and have the room to create one. If you like added privacy in your

kitchen when prepping or cleaning this is an instant hideaway and

generally all that will be displayed in the kitchen area is an island

bench and at most the oven and stove top. All your storage, sinks,

dishwashers and fridges are stored behind a door that visually looks like a pantry. It's certainly food for thought and personally if we had the room for this I would do this in a heartbeat!

1. Custom cabinetry is an art, it is your experienced qualified cabinet maker having an articulate eye for detail, steady hand and the vision to create a piece of cabinetry that no other one person can replicate to our precision.

DMB Kitchens Port Macquarie is a two-man team consisting of Brad Lewis and Scott Mackey. We are not a production line like other competitors all our cabinetry is constructed by hand not a machine where a button is pushed. I find it fascinating really yes, I agree an advertised “price point” in some big retailer chains seems eye catching and appealing, but I always question myself is that appealing price really saving the dollars in the long term?

Let me run an example – You see a six-man tent at your local chain supplier for a great price of $299 and bingo your eyes light up because what an amazing price and our natural impulse says lets buy this beauty it’s a bargain! Is it just me or have you ever noticed when you look closely at the quality of the material the said tent is made from material that is inferior e.g see through (no privacy and the sun will beam straight in at the crack of dawn), then we go and compare to a tent from a tent manufacturer and his price may be $1000 for a 6 man tent but when we look at the quality of the material it’s a solid canvas, quality finishes and workmanship that will withstand the test of time.

Let’s face it if we are buying a tent for $1000 we expect to get 10 years wear out of it don’t we? So truly how many years do you think you will get out of the $299 tent? If you're replacing it every year for 10 years, you're looking at $2990! Point to this story, always research!

You will find many reasons why there is a price point difference. If your anything like myself you don’t want to be purchasing the same thing every year over and over you want it done once, right the first time and many years of happiness with your goods.

2. Custom cabinetry is not imported nor manufactured using inferior products and by inferior, I mean Formaldehyde which imported product DOES contain and in case you the consumer are unaware Formaldehyde is like that of someone being told they have asbestos in their home.

The health repercussions of having this inferior product can be critical to your health - it is a cancer-causing agent. That very fact alone is enough to make me personally run one hundred miles, but if that doesn’t turn you off enough consider who will warrant your imported product? Is there a representative here is Australia that will come and look at an imperfection you may be unhappy with? I think you will find the answer will be no.

3. Custom cabinetry is an experience, it commences with initial contact, measure, custom design, quotation, acceptance, then customised manufacturing and the delivery of your beautiful piece that has been made with blood, sweat and love.

Custom cabinetry IS NOT a mass production, inferior products, no one to warrant their work, set measurements, no quality control, shipped to your front door piece of inferior garbage that won’t withstand many years of wear and tear.

So many points of difference at DMB Kitchens but the one that makes me really the proudest is that EVERYTHING from start to finish, all your emails, calls, texts all goes direct to Brad and that is why we make Brads mobile number very known to all. We ARE NOT an office that works 9-5 with a landline number only available for our clients and bad luck if you ring outside those hours, we will get back to you when we can.

We are literally available 24/7 so don’t worry if you need to call us at 6pm at night for a chat – we are available - no one wants stress in their lives, let’s face it life is stressful enough without un contactable tradesman. 5 KITCHEN ACCESSORIES MUST HAVES

For you to be reading this you must be in the process of doing the extraordinary task of researching the bits and bobs for your new kitchen! Well lucky for you I have taken the liberty to compile the top five accessories I know me personally I couldn't live without!

Pull out Bin Draw System

This system is fantastic! Lets face it, bins at the best of times are one of the most unpleasing items if not the most to look at in your kitchen. However a kitchen isn't a kitchen without a bin. So thankfully for us gone are the days were you have a freestanding bin on show in your kitchen for all your visitors to view. Thank you to the our ever evolving industry the pull out bin drawer system has been designed to be compact, discreet and user friendly! It literally is installed into the carcass of your new kitchen and your beautifully finished doors camouflage it completely. Its like a fabulous guessing game for your visitors of what's behind this door? The configurations they come in all differ, but plenty of options to suit your family's daily needs.

Soft CloseHallelujah I hear you say! I personally can't tell you how many times our precious little Isla has slammed her tiny fingers in the doors and drawers (the poor little darling), until now that is when we completed our kitchen renovation. The soft close was an absolute must have. Gone are the days of slamming doors and drawers in your kitchen. Soft close is exactly what the words say it is. A mechanism implemented into your drawers/doors that closes silently, smoothly and most importantly no more slamming of the fingers!

Stainless Steel Cutlery TraysOh how I used to dread ever so much our friends and family going to our cutlery drawer. It was one of those moments where I'd bounce up off the seat as quick as I could to beat them to the drawer just so they didn't see the hideous looking thing. Standardly your kitchen comes with the white plastic all in one cutlery tray - You know the ones that you take all the cutlery out of once a month to wash the cutlery tray so it doesn't build up with grime and looks in pristine immaculate condition all the time? If you answered yes I think you may have been telling me a porky! The stainless steel cutlery trays available on the market these days come in so many configurations. You can even have spice rack trays!! But any who, thanks to us putting in a stainless steel cutlery tray I now insist people go to our cutlery draw. The one we selected give the illusion of an all in one tray however each individual cutlery holder comes out for easy cleaning and makes your cutlery drawer look a million bucks! We love, love, love this invention!

LED Lighting

When we first brought Isla home I was getting up every three to four hours during the night for her feeds. Unfortunately when I got up that meant the whole house did. Why? Well our house was lit up like a Christmas tree and me trying to navigate my way around. It was a nightmare to be honest. They tell you not to stimulate a baby with bright lights during sleeping, well that was impossible for me until we opted for overhead LED lighting above our cooktop either side of our range hood. Now I literally flick a light switch and wallah! The kitchen lights up just nicely without any disruption to the rest of the family and particularly no stimulation for our new little one Aria! Another benefit is they come in an array of combinations. You can get strip lighting, singular, multicolour, the options are endless and it really sets a different mood in your kitchen when you're winding down of an evening.

Waterfall Ends

What is a waterfall end you ask? Yes just like the real life waterfalls it's an illusion that your stone tops are seamless and never end. Your quote you receive standardly will say stone tops x amount of dollars, however do yourself a favour and make sure you ask for waterfall ends. That extra little cost is really worth it. I was unsure until I compared apples with apples, first was our bathroom renovation were we used a straight 20mm stone top with no waterfall end and then came the kitchen. We upgraded to 40mm stone with waterfall end as we wanted a bold statement piece and wanted our "heart" (being the kitchen) to really pop and be an entertainers delight. Question this: Would you want half a heart or do you want the whole one? We always open up our home for our customers to come and view so they see exactly what we are talking about. We love having people over it's a personal approach our customers actually see the finished product in a home which is very different to what any cabinetry looks like on display in a showroom environment.

Of course there are many other accessories, I have only listed the ones I found to be of great benefit to my family. I shall leave you now pondering on what accessories you feel may be of benefit to your family.
